The Park Post - Week #4

Posted Date: 9/13/25 (12:00 PM)

Dear Park Families,

I hope you have a great time at Parkade.  Unfortunately, I will be out of town and will miss it.  Many thanks to all of you who make it happen for our PTA!

Things continue to move along very smoothly here on campus.  The kids are in a great routine and as of this coming Tuesday we will be 10% through the school year - just like that!

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to support your child at school and thanks to everyone who is able to volunteer on campus.  We are lucky to have so many helping hands!

Sincerely,

David

Raising the Bar - Check This Out

Raising the Bar is a county-wide initiative committed to keeping youth events substance-free through policy that prohibits adult drinking or drug use at youth-centered events. As a program of Marin Healthy Youth Partnerships, Raising the Bar works in collaboration with Marin Prevention Network, Marin County Office of Education, Marin Health and Human Services, Marin schools, youth sports teams and organizations and other local community based organizations. Together, we aim to shift norms around substance use and encourage healthy choices by promoting positive adult role modeling.

We are working with Raising the Bar this Fall to support a parent survey to better understand perceptions and understanding of drinking and substance use among our community members. Below there is a link to an anonymous survey. Please take a few minutes to fill this out and contribute to this very important work.

Breakfast and Lunch Waste

We throw out a lot of food everyday at Park. Please do not order food for your child unless you know they want the food and will eat it.  Let’s cut down on the food waste.  Thanks.

Kiddo! at Park School

As a reminder, Kiddo!'s Annual Campaign is underway.  You can learn more here. At our school, Kiddo! funds weekly art and music, as well as programs like dance, Shakespearience, poetry, and for the upper grades, orchestra, band, and chorus. Additionally, this year, Kiddo! is partially funding our elementary counselors and TK. This programming would not be possible without YOU; donations from parents make up 80% of Kiddo’s annual budget. Please reach out to our Kiddo! School Rep, Daisy Croswell, with questions and watch Kiddo!'s latest video.

Please No Parking in The Lot by the Condos on Catalpa

Please do not park in the parking lot on Catalpa that serves our neighbors. This is the lot by the lower playground and the TK classroom near the play structure and eating area. This is private property - please be respectful of our neighbors. Thanks!

Visitors on Campus

All campus visitors must sign in at the front office.  Also, as a reminder, dogs are not allowed on campus.  Thank you for respecting this policy.

News, Notes & Votes

Regular Board Meeting - September 10, 2025

Resolution #03-25/26: Sufficiency of Instructional Materials
Following a public hearing, the Board approved this resolution confirming that all students have sufficient textbooks and instructional materials for the current school year. These materials are aligned with state academic content standards in key subjects, including mathematics, science, history/social science, English/language arts, foreign language, and health. This annual process highlights the district’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality and equitable educational resources for every student.

Local Control & Accountability Plan (LCAP) and Budget Overview for Parents (2024–2027)
The Board held a public hearing on the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), originally presented on June 5, 2025, and approved on June 18, 2025. Due to a missing attachment in the earlier agenda, the Board completed a re-approval process. To meet procedural requirements, a second Special Board meeting was held later that evening to allow formal Board approval separate from the public hearing.

Resolution #05-25/26: Conveyance of Easement to the City of Mill Valley for Storm Drain Purposes
The Board approved an easement to the City of Mill Valley for storm drain improvements at the corner of Elm Avenue and E. Blithedale Avenue, located in the Park Elementary School parking lot. This project will improve stormwater management in our community while minimizing any impact on school activities.

Resolution #06-25/26: Joint Use Agreement with Tam Community Services District
The Board approved a resolution authorizing an agreement between the Mill Valley School District and Tam Community Services to offer an afterschool program at Tam Valley Elementary. This partnership will provide students with a safe and enriching environment after school, giving families additional care and learning opportunities right on campus.

Public Comment on Draft Environmental Impact Report
A total of 32 community members shared their thoughts on the recently released Draft Environmental Impact Report (D-EIR) for the MVMS project. The report evaluates a variety of options, with the originally proposed plan calling for the construction of a brand-new middle school. However, rising geotechnical and soil disposal costs have pushed the project beyond its current budget.

All public comments submitted between September 2 and October 17, 2025 (by 5:00 p.m.) are now under review. The Board of Trustees will take this feedback into account—along with key factors like cost, feasibility, and educational programming—as they determine the most appropriate location for the new school.

A decision on the preferred alternative is expected in December 2025, paving the way for construction to potentially begin as early as June 2026.

Through it all, MVSD remains committed to fiscal responsibility—funding the modernization project without additional financing—while still delivering a state-of-the-art learning environment for students and the wider community.  Thank you for being part of the process!
